Default Some people just arrogant

LISBON (AFP) - A row broke out in Portugal on Monday after a Nobel Prize-winning author denounced the Bible as a "handbook of bad morals".
Speaking at the launch of his new book "Cain", Jose Saramago, who won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, said society would probably be better off without the Bible.
Roman Catholic Church leaders accused the 86-year-old of a publicity stunt.
The book is an ironic retelling of the Biblical story of Cain, Adam and Eve's son who killed his younger brother Abel.
At the launch event in the northern Portuguese town of Penafiel on Sunday, Saramago said he did not think the book would offend Catholics "because they do not read the Bible".
"The Bible is a manual of bad morals (which) has a powerful influence on our culture and even our way of life. Without the Bible, we would be different, and probably better people," he was quoted as saying by the news agency Lusa.
Saramago attacked "a cruel, jealous and unbearable God (who) exists only in our heads" and said he did not think his book would cause problems for the Catholic Church "because Catholics do not read the Bible.
"It might offend Jews, but that doesn't really matter to me," he added.
Father Manuel Marujao, the spokesman for the Portuguese conference of bishops, said he thought the remarks were a publicity stunt.
"A writer of Jose Saramago's standing can criticise, (but) insults do no-one any good, particularly a Nobel Prize winner," the priest said.
Rabbi Elieze Martino, spokesman for the Jewish community in Lisbon, said the Jewish world would not be shocked by the writings of Saramago or anyone else.
"Saramago does not know the Bible," the rabbi said, "he has only superficial understanding of it."
The author caused a scandal in Portugal in 1992 with "The Gospel According to Jesus Christ."
The book depicted Jesus losing his virginity to Mary Magdalene and being used by God to control the world.
Saramago quit Portugal at the time and moved to Lanzarote, in the Spanish Canary Islands.

2 Timothy 3:13
But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.
Personally It'd be my opinion this guy is simply using the bible as an inabler. People may have bought his book because he was a Nobel prize winner. But now people will definately buy this book because he's the Nobel prize winner that bashes the Bible.

As much as it pains to know that people will perish and they don't have to, I will be looking forward to no longer being effected by those who let their pride cause them to speak about things they have never acknowledged and have no comprehension of.

God's Grace

I think they might well be right there. It does sound like a publicity stunt.

Should any of us be surprised that the world puts out literature bad mouthing the only written source that can bring them to salvation??

We know the Word has always been thought of in a bad light by most of the world. In these days and times it can only get worse. Hang on ladies and gents, the ride is about to go into a higher gear.

The Bible should come with an adult rating, all that sex and violence!

It is really sad that some believe the book to be literally true when it is obvious to many others that concept of the book just isn't credible.

It is an exact snap shot of the world today, and the sex and violence is not portrayed in the manner being expressed..

p.s. there will be no degrading God's Word, nor of any member here, per forum rules...

Mockery of Christians, Christians beliefs, the Christian God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, the Holy Trinity, or the Holy Bible are not allowed.

Yes there is alot of both-God was not a censor of His peoples history. Nor is He apologetic for being God and ordering the end of sinful tribes of people.

The fact that Jesus took the word to be literally true is enough for me.

He believed in a literal 7 day creation.
He believed Noah was true and the world was destroyed by a flood.
He believed in Babel and the dispersion of the nations.
What makes the Bible the most amazing book- Israel was prophesied to be scattered form their land thousands of years before they were, and then it was also prophesied thousands of years before that they would be restored to their land in unbelief to be prepared to pass under the rod of Gods judgment in order to be saved,....AND THEY HAVE!!! Apart from the language that is obviously symbolic- I hold the Bible as literally true as history has proven so often.

Some parts are certainly unsuitable for children.

What about people like me who used to be in the second group but who are now in the first group because we found that it is credible after all.
